The 7th UN Global Road Safety Week will be held 15-21 May 2023 under the theme #RethinkMobility to engage policy makers and encourage road users to switch to sustainable mobility. This modal shift is one of the recommendations in the Global Plan for the Decade of Action 2021-2030. Road safety is both a prerequisite for and an outcome of this shift.
Road traffic injures are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with around 1.3 million people killed and as many as 50 million people injured each year. For people aged 5-29 years, there is no greater threat to their lives. Globally, 1 of every 4 deaths occur among pedestrians and cyclists.
The Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 reflects an ambitious target to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030. It highlights that they can be prevented by addressing the whole of the transport system, taking action to ensure safe roads, vehicles and behaviours as well as to improve emergency care.
The FIA encourages Member Clubs to get involved, by promoting the messages of the campaign and, whenever possible, organizing events and activities with other road safety advocates.

Suggested activities
Here are some ideas for activities for the week to help you push your advocacy forward. This is not an exhaustive list and we would love to hear your other activity plans and ideas.
- Hold a media event or roundtable with a decision maker or other public figure – they have a powerful influence on people’s perceptions, since in many countries, people are not used to powerful people walking, cycling, and taking public transport.
- Walk your decision maker around the neighborhood – show them what the problems are and needs to be done to make your streets safer.
- Use the opportunity of the UN Global Road Safety Week for a public unveiling of an implementation and to push for wider roll out.
- Showcase the results of your road safety project, supported by the FIA RSGP programme. For example, FIA Members who have implemented School Assessment initiatives could showcase the outcomes, which helped improve high-risk school zone locations and protect our most vulnerable pedestrians and youth. This can be addressed at partners, decision-makers, funding institutions and youth.
- Launch a social media campaign calling on decision makers to improve road infrastructure in your area and for people to show their safe way of using the roads.
Share your photos and videos
Join a global movement supporting safe mobility: share your photos and video clips for the UN Global Road Safety Week #RethinkMobility campaign including:
- Short video clips (20 seconds or less) of you, community members, or decision makers describing what rethink mobility means in your context (your city, community, or country)
- Photos of you, community members, or decision makers with the #RethinkMobility signboards
- What activities you are doing for the UN Global Road Safety Week and what interventions you are calling for
Post them on your social media and tag the FIA!
Share long stories, in a form of article, with the FIA so that we can post it on www.fia.com and use during international events.
